The NAPTOSA leadership wishes all its members and all other stakeholders in education a Happy New Year. We hope that 2014 is a year where, together, we build on the success of the past and strive to improve the quality of teaching and learning in our Country.

The 2013 NSC results

NAPTOSA welcomes the release of the 2013 National Senior Certificate (NSC) results. The pass rate of 78.2% is pleasing, as it is a significant improvement on the 73.9% obtained in 2012.

NAPTOSA wishes to congratulate all its members and thanks them for their contributions to the success of the class of 2013.

NAPTOSA has always been concerned about the quality of passes and is therefore encouraged by the increase in the number of learners achieving bachelor degree passes. However, it is concerning that media reports on the results of the National Benchmark Test (NBT), used by many universities to assess the academic readiness of the first year university students, indicate that:

 Only 10% of matriculants that applied for Engineering and Medical Studies in 2013, for which Mathematics is a requirement, are competent in the subject;

  More than half of the students who wrote the NBT achieved less than 30% in the Mathematics test; and

 In terms of academic literacy and comprehension skills, only 30% were found to be competent or ready for the challenges of university studies.

Clearly, this indicates that much work is still to be done to improve the standard of basic education.

Early in this New Year you are requested to give some thought to your professional development needs. Let your Provincial Professional Development Officers and the National PDI know in which areas you need support. Consult the NAPTOSA website for the detailed and varied termly programmes offered in many Provinces and ensure early booking to attend the courses and workshops.

This year sees the final phasing in of the CAPS and although many of you attended introductory Departmental training, NAPTOSA will be offering more specific planning, content and assessment workshops for Senior Phase and Grade 12 subject teachers. Details to follow.

Our courses for Principals and Deputies will fulfil the SACE endorsement requirements providing the opportunity for our members at this level to upgrade management skills in compliance with the SACE-CPTD point system.

Make 2014 a year in which professional development is self-motivated, seen to be effective and a topic of discussion in your staffroom!

 NAPTOSA intends to keep you abreast of all the education news that affects you.
