Mr Basil Manuel, President, of the National Professional Teachers' Organisation of South Africa (NAPTOSA), expressed extreme grief at the loss of young lives as a result of the barbaric bombing at a boarding school in Potiskum, Nigeria. NAPTOSA conveys its heartfelt condolences to the parents of these young boys and the people of Nigeria, said Mr Manuel.

NAPTOSA is appalled that despite so much growth in the world, cowardly individuals/groups using religion as a front continue committing such dastardly acts on defenceless children, said Mr Manuel.

As a member of Education International (EI), NAPTOSA believes that it has a responsibility to all children to promote a culture of tolerance and respect. NAPTOSA is of the view that an education which includes the study of different religions and beliefs could prevent the perpetuation of faith based extremism, said Mr Manuel. It is important to raise children’s awareness of beliefs and traditions of religious communities in order to understand and respect them, he added.

Mr Manuel stated that NAPTOSA condemned this ghastly act and trusts that the Nigerian authorities will bring the perpetrators to book and that justice will be served.
