The Union invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons for the post of Events and Functions Organiser in the office of NAPTOSA Gauteng

Description of Post:  This senior administrative post will become vacant on the retirement of the present incumbent at the end of the year.  The appointment will be from 1 January 2014.

Ø  The post involves the organisation of meetings, conferences, events and functions of the Union including the annual conference, professional conferences, professional development activities and any other events as decided by the Chief Executive Officer, and this includes all administration associated with planning, execution of, and registration at the event/function/activity/conference;

Ø  The Organiser will work with convenors appointed, and/or specialist committees established, to plan programmes for events, conferences and functions, and will report to the Chief Executive Officer or his/her delegate;

Ø  The successful applicant will be also responsible for constructing and populating databases for committees, events, functions and conferences;

Ø  The Organiser will be required to establish a network of sponsors, exhibitors, venues and organisations which will assist with the execution of the plans for Union functions, events, meetings and conferences;

Ø  Additional duties may include distribution to branch chairpersons of notices for shortlisting and interviews in schools taking minutes at specified meetings of staff and executive committees of the Union in the Province; and

Ø  Any other administrative duties assigned by the Chief Executive Officer.


Requirements: This post is for a senior administrative officer.  The successful applicant

ü  Will be able to perform the duties described above in an efficient and competent manner.  Experience in the successful organisation of events and functions etc will be a very strong recommendation;

ü  Will have extensive experience in, and knowledge of education and would suit a teacher or a person who is committed to education;

ü  Will be able to work with a wide variety of persons in a constructive and positive atmosphere;

ü  Will have excellent writing and communication skills in English;

ü  Will be able to work without direct supervision but will also be a team player, interact in a constructive manner with members and employees of NAPTOSA as well members of the public; and

ü  Will possess the following skills and abilities which are considered essential for appointment: (i) excellent organisational skills; (ii) a thorough working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of programmes including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.  The Union makes extensive use of Microsoft Access, a database programme in Office, for the construction of databases for members attending events, functions and conferences.  A working knowledge of Access will be a distinct advantage.  In any event the successful applicant will be required to acquire a working knowledge of this programme including the merge function with Word;

ü  Will be required to work on several Saturdays in the year and to work beyond the usual working hours.


The Union offers:

      A competitive remuneration package which includes a basic salary in the range R231 924 to R304 587 per annum (negotiable) plus a 13th cheque, Pension Fund contribution, Housing Allowance and Medical Aid Subsidy.  A generous annual leave provision including an office closure period over Christmas and New Year is included;

      The normal working week is Monday to Friday and the place of work is the Union’s Gauteng Offices situated in Saxonwold, Johannesburg.
