DATES TO DIARISE
Note these dates: 1) ANA results will be released on 5 December 2013; 2) the NSC (Matric) results will be released on 6 January 2014 and 3) all schools reopen 13 January (for educators) and 15 January 2014 (for learners).
INFRASTRUCTURE REGULATIONS (MINIMUM NORMS AND STANDARDS)
NAPTOSA focused on two issues in its submission on the draft Regulations Relating to Minimum Uniform norms and Standards for Public School Infrastructure: the “distant†timeframes and compliance by provinces with the norms. The Minister published the final Regulations on 29 November 2013. NAPTOSA welcomes the improved timeframes and notes with appreciation that the Minister has incorporated the two timeframes NAPTOSA (and others?) recommended viz 2016 and 2020. However, the issue of compliance remains a challenge. The publication of these regulations is a victory for Equal Education. They have fought a long and hard battle to “fix our schools†– congratulations Equal Education.
Sadly, NAPTOSA must report that 2013 was not a productive year in the ELRC. A number of important matters remain unresolved. Some of these items are: the IQMS / QMS revision has not been finalised, the EMS for office-based educators is “work in progress†and the dispute regarding the increase in the notch interval from 1% to 1.5% has not been finalised.
DON’T MISS OUT IN 2014.
NAPTOSA has for many years offered exciting professional development programmes which have provided a range of learning and development opportunities for teachers. During 2013 thousands of NAPTOSA members attended workshops and conferences in all nine provinces.
NAPTOSA presented special seminars for each of the school phases as well as subject specific conferences for primary and secondary schools and seminars for SMT members, special workshops for beginner teachers and conferences for LSEN educators. Apart from the aforementioned seminars, many of our provincial offices presented workshops on a wide variety of topics, such as dyslexia, conflict management, classroom management, dynamic lesson preparation and much more.
