Post: Senior Manager – NAPTOSA Professional Development Institute (seconded post)
NAPTOSA requires a Senior Manager to lead and manage the Professional Development Institute (PDI) from 1 January 2017 - based at the NAPTOSA Head Office in Pretoria
This position is offered to school-based educators at management level, able to apply to the Department of Education for a period of secondment.
NAPTOSA’s Professional Development Institute aims to provide opportunities for the ongoing professional development of teachers, giving teachers renewed confidence in themselves and their chosen profession, in the face of classroom challenges and change.
NAPTOSA’s Professional Development Institute is intended to be a long-term sustainable programme that will benefit all teachers in the South African education and training system. The programmes of the Institute are open to all teachers regardless of union affiliation.
Essential strategic functions of the PDI include:
•Programme co-ordination with all the relevant bodies as indicated in Figure 2 of “A co-ordinated coherent national system for teacher education and development” (ISPFTED in South Africa 2011, p20).
•Effective administration including efficient and effective communication with all teachers and participants
•An appropriate and relevant monitoring and evaluation system to give effect to accountable and credible reporting.
•Quality assurance of the PDI and its offerings.
•Co-ordination and support of provincial development officers with respect to the countrywide NAPTOSA strategic plan for
•Fundraising from local and international donors to resource its professional development activities.
•Representation of NAPTOSA at relevant teacher development forums.
The PDI Senior Manager:
A PDI Senior Manager who must provide strategic leadership and management for the Institute and be accountable for the operational implementation of the NAPTOSA strategic plan for teacher professional development is required to fill an arising vacancy.
The eligible candidate must have an appropriate Post Graduate Qualification or equivalent (NQF Level 8 or above) with at least 5 years’ experience in a strategic leadership position. The candidate, therefore, must have the strategic competence and ability to take responsibility for the planning, execution and monitoring of new and existing functions and projects in collaboration with partners.
Extensive knowledge of the South African Education and Training landscape is required. Strong professional writing, verbal communication and interpersonal skills are essential. The ability to communicate and interact with officials at all levels of government and to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse and academic community are important requirements. The candidate should be able to motivate teams and simultaneously manage several projects.
The main duties of this position are to:
•Provide strategic and operational leadership and guidance to ensure the delivery and capacity of infrastructural deliverables
•Manage the line function providing strategic and operational leadership in respect of the PDI’s work
•Manage the overall operations within the budgetary controls, legal requirements and good governance
•Direct the management of the PDI’s human resources
•Optimise income generation and provide input into funding requirements.
Allowances can be negotiated dependant on qualifications, skills and experience.
In addition, the successful candidate will be required to:
•Enter into a performance agreement
•Sign a two year contract (renewable - subject to performance and funding)
•Be based at the NAPTOSA Head Office, Pretoria
•Report to the Executive Director
