NELSON ROLIHLAHLA MANDELA
18 July 1918 to 5 Dec 2013.
A truly great South African and citizen of the world is no longer with us and there is not one among us that, for years to come, will not remember exactly what we were doing when we heard the news.
Whilst we all knew that it was inevitable that this day would come, we nonetheless hoped that, somehow, it never would. The voice of compassion and reason in a sometimes insane world is still. He trustingly placed the remaining years of his life in our hands and advised us all to “use time wisely and forever realise that the time is always ripe to do right†We can only hope that, as South Africans we have, collectively and individually, lived up to the expectations that he had for us and that we will continue to do so long after his passing.
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela has lived a life and has left a legacy that few will ever emulate. We have been privileged to bear witness to his life. He was in every way a great peacemaker. He did indeed let his own light shine and by so doing unconsciously gave us all permission to do the same.
For the young people in our country, NAPTOSA wishes to remind them of the importance of education. In the great Madiba’s own words : “Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mineworker can become the head of the mine that a child of farm workers can become the president of a great nationâ€.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all fellow South Africans at this time of great sadness and we join in thanking Madiba for all the sacrifices that he made for South Africa and the legacy he has left us.
