Summary of main items applicable to educators and support staff in schools, offices and colleges

Salary increase:

  • 2012/13: the increase is 7% with effect from 1 May 2012
  • 2013/14: the average projected CPI plus 1% with effect from 1 April 2013
  • 2014/15: the average projected CPI plus 1% with effect from 1 April 2014
  • Safety nets apply in 2013/14 and 2014/15

Housing allowance

The housing allowance is increased from R800.00 to R900.00 per month with effect from 1 April 2012

Long Service Recognition

  • 10 years’ continuous service: certificate plus increase of annual leave to 30 working days. (Does not apply to school-based educators)
  • 20 years’ continuous service: certificate plus cash award of R 7 500,
  • 30 years’ continuous service: certificate plus cash award of R 15 000,
  • 40 years’ continuous service: certificate plus cash award of R 20 000
  • Implementation with effect from 31 July 2012
  • NB encashment of leave falls away

 Recognition of improved qualifications

  • Upon attainment of said qualifications, the employee will receive a once-off cash bonus of 10% of his/her annual salary notch, provided this does not exceed the minimum notch of salary level 8, of Public Service Act employees.
  • Implementation with effect from 1 January 2013
  • Various conditions apply.

 Family Responsibility Leave

  • 5 working days per annual leave cycle (increased from 3 days) if employees spouse or life partner gives birth to a child or the employee’s child, spouse or life partner is sick, and
  • 5 working days per annual leave cycle if the employee’s child, spouse, life partner or immediate family member dies
  • Implementation with effect from 1 January 2013

Pre-Natal Leave

With effect from 1 January 2013, an eligible employee will be entitled to 8 working days prenatal leave per pregnancy.
